🏖️ Phuket Leisure Traffic Recedes; Bangkok Holds Firm on Business Strength
Thailand's two types of business aviation markets have traced downward curves of differing depths during this summer travel season: leisure destinations faced heavier pressure, while business hubs proved relatively resistant to decline. Avi-Go data shows that from May 28 to July 27, 2026, Phuket (VTSP) recorded 98 business aviation movements, a decrease of 27 movements from the same period last year, down 21.6% year-on-year—a rather notable pullback among leisure destinations. Over the same period, Bangkok's dominant force was not the civil aviation hub Suvarnabhumi (VTBS, only 13 movements), but rather Don Mueang (VTBD), which logged 893 movements, accounting for about 89% of Bangkok's three airports, down 10.1% year-on-year; the three airports combined totaled 1,004 movements, down 11.5% year-on-year. Leisure traffic receded markedly faster than business travel, which is the core reason for the divergence in decline between the two locations.
Impact: Phuket is dominated by leisure and vacation traffic, making it more sensitive to seasonal demand fluctuations, with short-term capacity and FBO scheduling under pressure; Bangkok, leveraging its business and transit attributes, has a more stable source of traffic, serving as the ballast for Thailand's business aviation activity.
Recommendation: Operators and charter parties serving Phuket may review VTSP's slot and ground handling agreements before September 2026, adjusting peak-season capacity expectations downward based on current actual measured volumes; Bangkok operations should plan routes and support resources with VTBD as the primary airport, avoiding the mistake of using VTBS as a capacity benchmark.
