✈️ Pacific Northwest Dual-Hub Divergence: KBFI Surges Ahead While KPDX Faces Continued Pressure
Avi-Go data shows that from January through May 23, 2026, business aviation movements at Seattle Boeing Field (KBFI) reached 15,280 operations, up 7.9% year-over-year, with arrivals growing by as much as 12.8%, reflecting an accelerating rise in Seattle's appeal as a business destination. Over the same period, operations at Portland International Airport (KPDX) declined to 4,481 movements, down 7.3% year-over-year, with departures falling even more sharply at 8.8%. Divergence at the operator level is equally pronounced: NetJets recorded 6.5% growth at KBFI while declining 12.7% at KPDX; Flexjet grew 7.2% at KBFI while plunging 19.1% at KPDX. Both major fractional operators are visibly shifting resource allocation toward Seattle, and the traffic gap between the two hubs has evolved from a structural difference into a directional divergence.
Impact: For FBO operators with a presence in the Pacific Northwest, the sustained strength in KBFI arrivals signals an accumulation of ground service demand, while the contraction in KPDX departures points to a shrinking base of business travel activity at that airport. Pressure to rebalance resource allocation between the two locations will become increasingly apparent.
Recommendation: FBOs and ground service providers operating at KBFI or planning to enter the market are advised to complete a peak-season capacity assessment before Q3 2026, with particular focus on ramp availability and ground staffing during peak arrival windows. Operators at KPDX should promptly review existing service contracts and fixed cost structures to avoid carrying excessive fixed operating burdens during a period of declining traffic.
