⚠️ EASA Fuel Guidance Released, Cold-Soak Risk Surges for Long-Haul Southeast Asia Sectors
To ease the tight situation in which Europe's Jet A-1 inventory has only about six weeks remaining, EASA issued safety guidance on May 9, 2026, permitting the use of Jet A with a higher freezing point (approximately -40°C) as a substitute for Jet A-1 (approximately -47°C). AIN reported on June 15, 2026 that the affected regions cover Europe, Africa, Australia, India, and Southeast Asia. Avi-Go data shows that from January 1 to June 23, 2026, Singapore Changi (WSSS) had only 172 movements, yet the proportion of long-haul sectors (>300 minutes) was as high as 50%-65%, reaching 64.71% in June—far exceeding Mumbai (VABB) at 4.32%-9.73% and Delhi (VIDP) at 4.76%-10.29%. This indicates that Southeast Asian hubs, dominated by intercontinental long-range flights, are more sensitive to differences in fuel freezing point.
Impact: The higher the proportion of long-haul sectors, the greater the risk that prolonged cruise causes fuel temperature to approach the freezing point. Operators at Southeast Asian hubs may need to adjust cruise altitudes, add technical stops, and, combined with tankering rule assessments, this will directly drive up per-movement operating costs.
Recommendation: Operators using Southeast Asia as a long-range departure point should complete fuel freezing-point adaptability checks for their in-service fleet before scheduling for the July 2026 season, and rehearse cruise altitude and stopover plans under alternative fuel with their dispatch teams. At the same time, monitor the progress of EASA and Eurocontrol tankering assessments, and calculate cost exposure in advance.
