⛽ EASA Warns of Fuel Mixing Risk; African Jet Hubs Hit First
EASA issued a notice on June 25, 2026, warning that Jet-A and Jet A-1 pose mixing and confusion risks due to differences in freezing point and additive specifications, affecting airports across Europe, Africa, Australia, India, and Southeast Asia—coinciding with tight Jet-A supply in Europe and the Americas. The risk is concentrated at hubs with dense jet traffic and high single-aircraft fueling volumes, while turboprops such as the PC-12 and King Air are relatively less sensitive owing to higher fuel tolerances. Avi-Go data shows that among the top African business aviation departure/arrival hubs from January 2026 to date, Lagos DNMM led with 2,920 movements and Abuja DNAA followed with 2,225; Johannesburg FAOR recorded 1,918 and Lanseria FALA 1,561. Among top aircraft types, the turboprop PC-12 (2,709 movements) led the field, with the jet representative Challenger 604 at 1,786.
Impact: Fueling operations at jet-dense hubs such as Lagos and Johannesburg face specification-verification pressure. If FBOs and operators neglect to compare freezing-point parameters, fuel-system icing risks may be triggered; turboprop-dominated regional hubs are relatively less affected.
Recommendation: Operators should update pre-fueling specification verification checklists for African and Southeast Asian sectors before mid-July 2026, clearly noting the freezing-point differences between Jet-A and Jet A-1. FBOs should complete fueling-personnel specification-identification training and dual-review procedures for fuel documentation before the summer peak.
