NASA has selected four university teams to advance aviation research through its University Leadership Initiative, marking the program's ninth round of funding, with awards totaling approximately $30 million for multiyear projects. Andrew Provenza, project manager at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, said the awards align with NASA's aeronautics mission priorities, including new propulsion concepts for supersonic flight and learning-enabled avionics for urban air mobility platforms.

The University of Minnesota, led by Terrence Meyer, will run a four-year project to develop a fuel-flexible propulsion system combining a turbofan for takeoff and subsonic flight with a ramjet for supersonic cruise at Mach 4, or more than 3,000 mph. Stanford University received two awards: one led by Somil Bansal for a four-year project on machine learning-enabled avionics for communications and navigation, and another led by Juan Alonso for a four-year project building a high-fidelity simulation framework for low-noise flight paths for small air mobility aircraft in urban environments. Virginia Tech, led by Darshan Sarojini, will pursue a three-year project integrating model-based systems engineering, multidisciplinary design optimization, and uncertainty quantification into next-generation aircraft design.
University Leadership Initiative teams are composed of graduate and undergraduate students led by faculty, forming partnerships with other universities, community colleges, and industry, with guidance from experts at NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration, and other organizations. The initiative has operated for more than ten years as part of NASA's Research and Technology Mission Directorate.
