AI-driven inspection and predictive-maintenance tools signal a broader MRO shift toward data-based engine health monitoring to reduce unplanned shop visits and disruption.
Engineers at GE Aerospace's technology centre in Bengaluru are developing AI-assisted inspection tools, analytics-based maintenance systems and engine-cleaning technology aimed at improving the reliability and availability of commercial aircraft engines across their operational lifecycle. At an Engine 101 briefing in Bengaluru, the company's engineering leaders outlined how commercial aircraft engines are designed, tested, maintained and prepared for a more fuel-efficient future, covering engine durability and safety testing, AI-assisted inspection, condition-based maintenance and future propulsion concepts.

One concept discussed was CFM RISE, a technology demonstration programme run jointly by GE Aerospace and Safran exploring Open Fan architecture, compact-core designs and hybrid-electric engine technologies, targeting more than 20% better fuel efficiency compared with today's most efficient commercial engines. On the maintenance side, GE Aerospace's AI-enabled Blade Inspection Tool helps technicians capture and review images of turbine blades, and has been used on GEnx widebody engines for approximately three years, cutting blade-inspection time by about half while improving accuracy compared with standard borescope inspections; it is now deployed at more than a dozen GE Aerospace MRO facilities and customer sites servicing CFM LEAP narrowbody engines.
The Bengaluru centre also contributes to the company's ABM.AI tool and engine-health-monitoring systems, which combine operational data, inspection findings, AI models and physics-based models to support condition-based maintenance planning and improve the predictability of shop visits. GE Aerospace's 360 Foam Wash system addresses dust and dirt build-up inside engines as part of pre-inspection preparation. Shilpa Gupta, Chief Technology Officer of GE Aerospace in India, said Bengaluru engineers are making an important impact across the engine lifecycle, from improving reliability, durability and time on wing for the fleet flying today to advancing technologies for a more efficient future of flight.
