The programme illustrates how a national speed-record aircraft generated aerodynamic data later shared internationally and applied to supersonic airliner development.
The Fairey Delta 2 (FD2), a British experimental delta-wing jet, set a world air speed record of 1,132 miles per hour over a surveyed course along the Sussex coast on March 10, 1956, making Britain the first nation to officially surpass 1,000 mph in level flight. The record flight was flown at 38,000 feet within strict 300-foot altitude corridors. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Avon engine, the FD2 had a thin delta wing, an ultra-narrow retracting undercarriage, fully hydraulic flight controls with no manual backup, and a drooping nose mechanism that pivoted the cockpit ten degrees downward to improve landing visibility.

Chief test pilot Peter Twiss, a former Royal Navy carrier aviator and Empire Test Pilot School graduate, flew the FD2 on its maiden flight on October 6, 1954, at Boscombe Down. Development had been delayed by the Korean War, which redirected Fairey's resources to the Fairey Gannet. During envelope-expansion trials at 30,000 feet, Twiss survived an engine flameout, gliding roughly forty miles back to base and completing a high-speed belly landing.
The aircraft was publicly shown at the 1956 Farnborough Airshow, drawing interest from Dassault engineers, and the Fairey team later ran low-altitude supersonic trials at Dassault's facilities near Bordeaux with Dassault recording the data. After the 1957 British Defence White Paper curtailed military interceptor programmes, the FD2 was reconfigured as the BAC 221 with extended landing gear and an ogival wing, generating aerodynamic data used in developing Concorde. The aircraft is preserved at the Yeovilton Museum.
