Regulatory pace rather than technology now separates markets, with China's first-mover certification pulling ahead of the US and Europe by years.

Electric vertical take-off and landing air taxis have moved from concept to partial commercial reality in 2026, with China the only country operating paid passenger service while the United States and Europe await final certification. EHang holds the world's first commercial eVTOL type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and its pilotless, two-passenger EH216-S, with a range of roughly 19 miles, has carried revenue passengers in Guangzhou and Hefei since 2023, with service now added in Shenzhen and a Shanghai launch underway through 2027. Two of EHang's operating partners had logged more than 3,000 accident-free flight missions as of mid-2026.

In the United States, Joby Aviation's S4 and Archer Aviation's Midnight each carry a pilot plus four passengers, cruise at approximately 150-200 mph, and fly 20-100 miles per charge with a 10-15 minute fast recharge. Joby has cleared Stage 4 of the FAA's five-stage certification process, while Archer became the first manufacturer to close Phase 3 of the FAA's four-phase process, though neither holds final airworthiness certification. Joby completed a flight from JFK Airport to a Manhattan heliport in roughly seven minutes in April 2026. Boeing sold Wisk Aero, Insitu and SkyGrid to Archer in 2026 for a minority stake, and Wisk's pilotless Generation 6 aircraft, capable of carrying four passengers up to 90 miles, conducted a supervised demonstration in July 2026 in which one ground operator managed three uncrewed aircraft alongside regular air traffic.

The United Arab Emirates is on track to become the first market outside China with paying eVTOL passengers, with Joby targeting Dubai and Archer targeting Abu Dhabi for commercial service in the fourth quarter of 2026; Joby has quoted Dubai fares starting at AED 350, about $95, for a 15-minute flight, while Archer says Abu Dhabi pricing will initially track premium rideshare services before declining as fleet utilization improves. In Europe, no aircraft has cleared full EASA type certification, with Volocopter targeting Light Sport-category certification for its VoloXPro by end of 2026 and its VoloCity following in 2027, and Vertical Aerospace running a certification campaign for its VX4 through 2028. US commercial launch dates have slipped to late 2026 or 2027, most likely on airport-shuttle routes in New York, Los Angeles or Texas, and every company in the sector has already missed at least one earlier target date. Lilium filed for insolvency in October 2023, with its assets acquired and relaunched in 2024.
