Avi-Go data shows that Wheels Up's business aviation flight operations in Q1 2026 demonstrated strong growth momentum: year-over-year increases of 30.8%, 37.8%, and 33.2% in January, February, and March respectively, with the active fleet expanding from approximately 105 aircraft to between 128 and 130 aircraft — fleet transformation results that once drew considerable market attention. However, entering April, flight operations dropped sharply to 4,884 movements, turning negative year-over-year at -3.6%; the first 20 days of May recorded only 2,958 movements, a year-over-year decline of 13.5%, with the active fleet contracting further to 71 aircraft, already below the 81 aircraft recorded during the same period in 2025. This cliff-edge reversal stands in stark contrast to the high growth of Q1. Although cumulative year-to-date flight operations through early 2026 remain 18.4% above the prior year (27,162 movements versus 22,932 movements), the trajectory going forward has already triggered clear warning signals. The compounding effect of seasonal demand contraction and fleet adjustment strategy is likely the primary driver of this volatility.
Impact: For brokers and FBOs that rely on the Wheels Up fleet to fulfill charter business, the sharp contraction of the active fleet in April and May means significantly reduced deployable resources, and near-term bargaining power on the supply side may narrow. At the same time, should this trend extend into the summer peak season, Wheels Up's ability to deliver on its membership service commitments will face a direct test, and the risk of member attrition cannot be overlooked.
Recommendation: Brokers should promptly assess alternative fleet sources before the peak season launches in June 2026, avoiding excessive dependence on a single operator. Wheels Up itself would be well advised to publicly disclose its fleet adjustment plan before the end of June 2026, in order to stabilize market expectations and alleviate uncertainty among its membership base.
