UNGA Week Tightens Alternate Capacity

🗽 KBLM Closure Overlaps with New York Operations Window

UAS International Trip Support issued an operational advisory on August 26, 2026, warning that airport slots and parking capacity in New York could tighten rapidly during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week from September 18 through September 28, while NOTAMs and restrictions may also be adjusted at short notice. Meanwhile, Monmouth Executive Airport (KBLM) will close both runways and suspend fixed-wing operations from September 14 through October 15 for runway rehabilitation; helicopter operations will not be affected. The project is not directly related to the General Assembly, but its schedule overlaps with the entire High-Level Week. Avi-Go data show that from August 8 through August 28, 2026, Morristown Municipal Airport (KMMU) recorded 754 departures and 754 arrivals, totaling 1,508 movements; Stewart International Airport (KSWF) recorded 179 departures and 183 arrivals, totaling 362 movements. Together, the two airports handled 1,870 movements during the same period, with KMMU accounting for approximately 80.6%. This pre-High-Level Week baseline indicates that alternative arrangements at outlying airports will be more concentrated at KMMU and KSWF, but it does not represent peak daily traffic during the event.

Impact: With KBLM suspending fixed-wing operations, operators that rely on outlying New York airports to distribute aircraft parking and provide diversion options will have one fewer available location. KMMU’s recent business aviation traffic has been significantly higher than KSWF’s; if additional demand continues to concentrate there during the event window, coordination pressure involving aircraft parking, ground handling, and last-minute adjustments will become more pronounced.

Recommendation: Operators conducting New York missions from September 18 through September 28 should immediately remove KBLM from their fixed-wing diversion airport lists and separately confirm aircraft parking and ground handling arrangements with KMMU and KSWF. They should also continue monitoring changes to the NOTAMs and temporary restrictions referenced in the UAS advisory and retain KSWF as an alternative if KMMU cannot accommodate their operations.
