🤖 Pentastar Introduces Robotic Monitoring for High-Frequency Aircraft Towing

On August 20, 2026, Pentastar Aviation disclosed that it had deployed Airtrek Robotics autonomous wingtip-monitoring robots in August at Oakland County International Airport (KPTK) in Michigan, United States, with full implementation planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. During aircraft towing, the robots can move alongside the fuselage, monitor the surrounding environment, and help identify obstacles, shifting some wingtip-monitoring tasks toward a combination of machine perception and human decision-making. Pentastar emphasized that the technology is intended to supplement the judgment and operational experience of ground personnel rather than replace traditional wing walkers. Avi-Go data shows that from June 1 to August 20, 2026, KPTK recorded 7,371 business aircraft movements, comprising 3,694 departures and 3,677 arrivals, with each departure or arrival counted as one movement. This traffic reflects the operating scale of the airport where the equipment is deployed, but does not equate to Pentastar’s handling volume, towing volume, or number of robot-assisted operations.

Impact: For Pentastar, once robotic obstacle monitoring is integrated into the towing process, the focus of on-site roles will shift toward alert verification, communication with tug operators, and abnormal-situation response. Staffing will still need to account for equipment failures and complex ramp environments. KPTK’s 7,371 business aircraft movements over 81 days also mean that, following full implementation in the fourth quarter, equipment reliability and human-machine collaboration procedures will be tested under sustained operations.

Recommendation: Before full implementation in the fourth quarter of 2026, Pentastar could establish alert severity levels, failure contingencies, human authority to halt towing, and reset procedures for Airtrek. It should also separately record robot interventions, false alarms, towing stoppages, and human takeovers. Subsequent evaluations should focus on these metrics rather than measuring deployment effectiveness solely by the airport’s business aircraft movement volume.
