📈 Citation XLS Family Flies 43.2 More Hours per Aircraft
The Citation XLS family (560XL/Excel/XLS) recorded higher per-aircraft utilization in the second quarter of 2026, while its average leg duration was close to that of the CJ4. Avi-Go data show that from April 1 through June 30, 2026, the 423 active tail numbers classified in the database as Citation XLS completed 28,505 flights, averaging 106.1 flight hours per aircraft and 94.49 minutes per leg. The 389 active CJ4 tail numbers completed 15,339 flights, averaging 62.9 flight hours per aircraft and 95.66 minutes per leg. The former had 34 more active tail numbers, an increase of 8.7%, and averaged 43.2 more flight hours per aircraft, a difference of 68.7%. However, the average leg duration differed by only 1.17 minutes between the two groups, indicating that the difference in cumulative quarterly flight hours was driven primarily by flight frequency rather than significantly longer individual missions. This result is presented using the Citation XLS family (560XL/Excel/XLS) terminology.
Impact: Higher quarterly flight hours per aircraft will cause the Citation XLS family to reach hourly maintenance, component replacement, and consumables usage thresholds sooner, requiring fleet managers to coordinate downtime and replacement capacity more frequently. For MRO providers serving both Citation groups, the utilization gap between 106.1 hours and 62.9 hours will also change the demand cadence for maintenance slots, rotable components, and commonly used consumables.
Recommendation: Fleet managers should first verify the classification of each tail number as a 560XL, Excel, or XLS, and then schedule maintenance on a rolling basis according to each aircraft’s actual flight hours and cycles, rather than applying a uniform plan to the 423-aircraft sample. MRO providers should closely monitor the distribution of hourly maintenance items coming due for this family in the third quarter of 2026 and allocate rotable components based on the flight frequency represented by 28,505 flights.
