✈️ London Biggin Hill Spends Eight Figures on Runway Upgrade as Business Aviation Traffic Falls 13% Against the Trend
London Biggin Hill Airport (EGKB) has recently completed a major infrastructure investment, yet has been unable to halt a decline in traffic. In January 2026, the airport completed an eight-figure GBP runway improvement project, and the UK CAA subsequently approved an extended satellite instrument approach trial on 14 May 2026 to strengthen operational resilience in low-visibility conditions. Nevertheless, Avi-Go data shows that from 1 January to 14 May 2026, EGKB recorded only 4,740 business aviation movements, a decline of 13.1% compared with 5,452 movements during the same period in 2025, representing a reduction of 712 movements. Among the combined 19,439 movements across London's four principal business aviation airports, EGKB ranked third with a 24.4% share, trailing significantly behind Farnborough (34.3%) and Luton (30.9%), with infrastructure investment yet to translate into visible traffic growth.
Impact: For FBOs and ground handlers operating at EGKB, sustained share pressure means narrowing unit revenue margins, and should the downward traffic trend continue into the second half of 2026, absorbing operating costs across a smaller movement base will become increasingly difficult. While the delayed introduction of satellite instrument approach capability should improve availability during winter low-visibility periods, it is unlikely on its own to close the competitive gap with Farnborough and Luton in the near term.
Recommendation: Airport management should initiate targeted route development aimed at long- and ultra-long-range business jet fleets (such as the Global and Falcon 8X types) before Q3 2026, with a focus on promoting EGKB's low-congestion advantages and runway upgrade achievements to Middle Eastern and Asian operators not yet deeply engaged with the airport. FBO operators are also advised to introduce differentiated ground service packages by the end of June 2026, using service quality to offset the airport's inherent geographic disadvantage.
