Avanti NX Launch Orders Mask Shrinking Active Fleet

✈️ Avanti NX Receives First Launch Orders, But Active Fleet Has Shrunk by Nearly Half

Avi-Go data shows that global P180 fleet activity is experiencing a significant decline: at its July 2025 peak, monthly movements reached 1,263 and the active fleet stood at 71 aircraft, falling by April 2026 to 749 movements and 40 active aircraft — a 44% reduction in active fleet size from peak, marking the lowest complete-month figure since January 2025. Against this backdrop of contraction, Piaggio Aerospace announced on April 23, 2026 at Aero Friedrichshafen in Germany that it had received the first launch orders for the Avanti NX (buyers undisclosed). The Avanti NX was officially unveiled in February 2026 as a modernized upgrade of the P180, driven by Baykar Technologies (which completed its acquisition of Piaggio in June 2025). Chief Design Officer Alberto Caruso stated the type is expected to enter service in 3 to 4 years, with the upgrade program offering both new-build aircraft and retrofit kit options. In terms of operational geography, the United States leads with 8,777 departures, accounting for 53.7% of global volume and representing the largest single market for the P180, followed by France with 2,477 departures, while Italy itself recorded only 619 departures — reflecting the real impact that chronic parts supply constraints have had on operators in the aircraft's home country.

Impact: For existing P180 operators, the clarification of a retrofit kit pathway is a key positive — if the NX can deliver on its 3-to-4-year timeline, holding aircraft and awaiting retrofit may prove more economical than early retirement. However, the continued fleet contraction means the maintenance support network will narrow further, and near-term parts availability pressure will not be relieved by the NX announcement alone.

Recommendation: P180 operators in the United States and France should proactively engage with Piaggio/Baykar in the second half of 2026 to confirm the technical specifications and reservation window for the retrofit kit, in order to secure priority retrofit eligibility ahead of the NX's formal entry into service. They should simultaneously assess the maintenance cost trajectory of their existing aircraft to build adequate financial buffer for fleet renewal decisions in 2027 to 2028.
