Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop across South Florida this afternoon and evening, with an isolated strong to severe storm possible, according to CBS12 meteorologists. A south to southwest wind will initially concentrate storm activity across inland areas during the afternoon, and as storms develop, their leftover boundaries could collide with sea breezes to trigger additional thunderstorms closer to coastal metro areas later in the day.

The primary concern is powerful downburst winds, produced when rapidly sinking air from a thunderstorm hits the ground and spreads outward, with the greatest risk where storms merge or multiple boundaries collide. Frequent lightning and torrential rainfall are also expected with the strongest storms. Afternoon highs will range from the low to mid-90s, with heat index values generally between 100 and 105 degrees and some locations feeling between 105 and 110 degrees before storms bring relief.

A new plume of Saharan dust is forecast to move into South Florida tonight and into Monday, which should reduce the overall number of thunderstorms, though the dry air could help any storms that do form produce stronger wind gusts. A few strong to severe storms will remain possible on Monday despite lower overall storm coverage.
