Southern California is heading into what forecasters call its hottest week of the year, with a heat wave running from Tuesday through Friday and the National Weather Service issuing a high-risk warning for heat-related illness. At Death Valley's Furnace Creek, Sunday's high reached 121 degrees, with temperatures of 119 to 120 degrees projected through Friday and overnight lows in the mid-90s. A 68-year-old French traveler died on August 17 in Death Valley National Park after his vehicle broke down on a remote road when temperatures reached 116 degrees. Authorities are urging residents to drink fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, avoid direct sun, and check on relatives and neighbors.
