Walmart founder Sam Walton began flying small private planes in the 1950s to scout store locations across remote areas of the American South and Midwest, starting with a used Ercoupe Model 415-C bought for $1,850 and flown from Arkansas to Oklahoma City on a range of about 430 miles per tank. He often brought his dog, Ol' Roy, visited two to three stores a day taking notes on yellow legal pads, and flew weekend "scout flights" over small towns to count cars in competitor parking lots. In 1968, Walton and his brother Bud formally established Walmart Aviation with professional pilots shuttling executives from Bentonville, Arkansas, under a strict no-overnight-stay rule meant to avoid hotel costs, justified by saved travel time, multiple city visits per day, and spreading flight costs across six to eight passengers.

By the 1980s, with Walmart at $1 billion in annual sales, the company moved to turboprops such as the Beechcraft King Air, priced between $1.5 million and $3.2 million new and costing roughly $400 to $700 per flight hour, running a Monday-through-Thursday "Flight Grid" shuttle to regional airstrips ahead of Saturday morning meetings. As the company expanded coast to coast the 250-mph King Airs proved too slow, prompting a switch to Bombardier Learjets, first the Learjet 31 and later the Learjet 45, flying over 500 mph, with permanent regional jets later stationed at international offices in Canada, Mexico, and South America.

Today Walmart runs its aviation network from a wholly owned terminal eight miles from Bentonville headquarters, operating a fleet of roughly 15 to 22 business jets ranging from the Cessna Citation Sovereign at about $6 million to the Bombardier Global 7500 at $75 million. Separately, Palantir CEO Alex Karp spent $17 million on private aviation last year, a period in which the company's stock was the year's best performer, and corporate jet governance drew scrutiny in the past through the case of former Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski, jailed in connection with misuse of company funds including personal expenses billed to the company.
