Death Valley is an extraordinary place, but its heat, distances and remoteness can be dangerous, regardless of experience. We're grateful to everyone who took part in the search, and our thoughts are with his loved ones."

The park service warns that mobile phones do not function in many areas and that some roads are accessible only to off-road vehicles, advising visitors to carry sufficient water and to remain with a broken-down vehicle rather than walk, since a stationary vehicle is easier for search teams to spot.
