[Advanced Air](/entities/479c8569a5ef5e37aa2de93fd2f9f809) Mobility (AAM) is broadening aviation with new aircraft types, including electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxis, small cargo drones, and highly automated airframes fitted with cameras and sensors, aiming to expand aviation services rather than replace existing ones. Key applications include intracity air taxi operations, regional electric and hybrid aircraft linking city pairs, personal recreational eVTOLs, and specialized military, cargo, and public safety uses.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it is developing regulations, conducting operational testing, and updating certification rules — including the MOSAIC framework — to integrate these technologies into the national airspace. Challenges remain in battery energy density, broad market adoption, and managing airspace increasingly shared with uncrewed aircraft.
